Tom Otterness was born in Wichita in 1952 and moved to New York in 1970, where he studied at the Whitney‘s Independent Study Program. In 1978, he began working as a public artist with Collaborative Projects, a socially active artist’s collective. Since then, Otterness has been commissioned by a variety of public organizations including the U.S. General Services Administration, the City of Münster, Germany, and the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority. His work is included in collections including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh.
