Louise Lawler was born in 1947 in Bronxville, New York and received a BFA from Cornell University in 1969. Her work, mostly photographic, challenges the value and meaning of art, often focusing on physical and intellectual context and viewers’ receptions. Lawler’s work has been exhibited at institutions including Dia:Beacon, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Neue Galerie New York, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Lawler is part of the Whitney Biennial 2008 and was also part of the 1991 and 2000 Whitney Biennials.
